1. What are the top three key concerns you have about the existing open space in your community?

Think about the existing open space in your community. Examples include: parks, ball fields, vacant lots,  gardens, traffic triangles, riverfronts.

Consider the condition of these spaces: How are they maintained and used? Do you have easy access to them?

Please prioritize the top three key concerns you have about these spaces (specific and/or general) at the top of your post.

Litter and Lack of Receptacles

I'd first like to say hello to everybody. I just moved to Philly from NH. I am so happy to have found this site and the whole initiative to clean and green the city.

I live close to Pennypack Woods and I was so thrilled that they're were actually woods in the city. However, I was so disappointed by the litter and in and around the water and paths. The litter on the streets isn't very pleasant either. I was curious as to why they're aren't very many trash receptacles on the paths and in the heavy foot-traffic areas.

3 issues and response to events

In the summer Gorgas Park holds free concerts every Thursday or Friday night. There will be a banner up soon, if not already, letting you know when it begins and takes place.

1. The open space median on Henry needs to be taken care of and maintained. The grass is over a foot high. Also, in the Business District on Ridge Ave. starting at at Hermitage to Shurs, the need to add street lights, mulch around the trees and plant flowers.

2. Not really an open space issue, but the people loitering. I find it especially overwhelming on Ridge between Leverington and Levering needs to stopped. Stricter laws need to be enforced.

3. And again the trash all around, but I especially notice it by the entrance to the trail near Monastery and Henry.

Green Space Underutilized

I agree with the previous commenter.

1) I also feel that a lot of the little parks in Manayunk/Roxborough are underutilized. I think the parks need to be promoted more in the community and perhaps hold local events at the parks or just community gatherings/picnics at the parks.

2) The Canal needs to be cleaned. There is so much trash in the water.

3) Cleaning up after dogs needs to be enforced. There are plastic bags provided along the towpath, but more people need to use them, all over the neighborhood. Green spaces can't be enjoyed if you are looking down all the time to watch your step.

Picking Up Trash

I love living in Roxborough because it has a lot of open green space and it's very close to the water. What I don't like is seeing trash around the woods, EVERYWHERE! I also don't see any "No Littering Signs". There are a few around the area, but they are all all tiny, faded and from 30 years ago.

I think this city has to set a very strict littering policy. If you litter, you pay. The only way to teach someone a lesson is to punish them in the right way (monetarily). All fine money can go into a fund that will be used for cleaning supplies and volunteer worker events.

It's not only my area, it's everywhere in the city (especially North and West Philly). I really think there needs to be stricter policies in place on littering (in our more blighted and poorer neighborhoods especially). People just throw trash out their window on their way to work. It has to stop!

I think the green spaces also have to be taken better care of. The edges of the woods should be cleaned up. Leaves should be taken and old and dead trees need to either be replaced or removed. We are so lucky to live in a city where all of this foliage grows naturally. I've been to a few parts in the West and they have to water all of their grass everyday because it does not rain enough. If we're lucky enough to have all of this lush and natural green space, we need to take care of it.
